Gokokuji
護国寺
A 1681 temple commissioned by the Shogun's mother. One of the few large structures in central Tokyo to survive both the Great Kantō Earthquake and the bombings.
Gokokuji is bigger than it looks from the gate, and almost always nearly empty. The main hall is original. The grounds slope back into a quiet temple cemetery, and if you wander in you will find — among many graves — those of three successive Urasenke tea masters.
We send guests here when they want to sit somewhere old without paying admission. The grounds are always open. Bring a coffee.
The temple is eighteen minutes' walk from the tea room, or one stop on the Yūrakuchō line from Gokokuji station to Edogawabashi and a slow walk back.
