Sengoku is, by Tokyo standards, very quiet. The tea room sits on a side street that you would walk past without noticing.
There are two stations called Sengoku. We mean the one on the Toei Mita line — a one-minute walk and you are at our door. The other one, on the Yamanote loop, is twenty minutes south and a different conversation entirely.
What you find here is not picturesque exactly. Old timber houses next to small concrete apartment blocks, a koban on the corner, an elderly man watering his hydrangeas. People live here. That is the appeal.
If you have an extra fifteen minutes before or after the ceremony, walk south to the small Tokugawa-era graveyard at Jōrenji, or north along Hakusan-dōri toward the shrine. Neither is a destination. Both are pleasant.
